This Vancouver educational institution, often referred to as Van Tech, is officially recognized as a public secondary school, writes Vancouver Future. Although historically considered one of the vocational schools, it is now recognized for its diverse academic programs.
In this article, based on information from sandbigbox.com, we delve deeper into the history and programs of Vancouver Technical Secondary School.
Founding of the School
The school was established in 1916, initially as a boys-only institution. Its first location was in the basement of a Royal School. Later, the school was moved to the Labour Temple.
A New Building
As student enrollment grew, the need arose for a dedicated school building.
In 1928, the school relocated to a new facility.
Girls were admitted to the school for the first time in 1940, and a separate wing in the eastern part of the school was designated for them.
Extensive Renovations
In 2005, the school underwent a major renovation project, which was completed in 2008 at a total cost of 40 million dollars.
One notable result of the renovations was a reduction in available space, leading to the relocation of classrooms and workshops. This change also significantly reduced the building’s capacity.
Previously, the school could accommodate 2,100 students, but after the renovations, this number dropped to 1,700. Additionally, the modernization included upgrading the interiors of all classrooms, funded by the students’ parents.
Mini-School Programs
The school offers a wide selection of programs through its mini-schools.
- Summit Program: This five-year program emphasizes four core academic subjects: mathematics, science, social studies, and English.
The program accelerates the study of science and mathematics.
Students can participate in numerous extracurricular activities, including a three-day camp, a week-long camp featuring horseback riding, and trips to European countries. - Flex Program: This is another five-year mini-school program focusing on humanities, English, and social studies.
Students have access to unique lessons during the first three years of the program and then typically proceed to advanced studies in history and philosophy.
Previously, Van Tech also offered a Hairdressing Program, which concluded in 2016.

Technical Education at Van Tech
A key highlight of the school is its focus on technical education.
Students take specialized classes in woodworking, metalworking, and jewelry making. They craft their own projects, including stools, cutting boards, jewelry boxes, safes, rings, and pendants. Senior students take on larger projects such as kitchen cabinets, electric guitars, tables, and chests.
The school also integrates modern tools and techniques into its curriculum:
- 3D Printing and CAD: Students learn to design and create using computer software and hands-on methods.
- Design Software: Using programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, students create personalized projects like buttons, labels, and basic Photoshop tasks.
- Circuitry and Robotics: Students gain hands-on experience in schematic design and robotics.
Finally, Vancouver Technical School introduces all students to the basics of programming through Python. This foundational course prepares them for further exploration in computer science.
